I visited two city centre restaurants last week to see what changes they were making for their menu in 2011.

Exciting new Chinese restaurant Inniu Kung Fu on Church Street officially opened its doors last weekend, offering a fresh and healthy take on Chinese-style cuisine.

The Asian Tea House is a pan Asian restaurant centrally located on 15 Mary Street, Galway. I had heard several good things about the Asian Tea House over the past year from my eldest daughter, who loves the food there. The name for some reason did not lead me to expect the great variety and authenticity that is The Asian Tea House.

Way back in the dim and distant past I was a devoted customer at the Eastern Tandoori in South William Street, Dublin. It was the very early 1980s and in the days when I had an expense account that included lunch every day (God bless Digital). This meant that I had an Eastern Tandoori lunch at least once a week, and while there were other Indian restaurants to choose from, this was the best.

The Alisan Oriental restaurant has become established in the ever expanding array of fine restaurants in Claremorris. The restaurant has an air of class about it from the moment you step in the door. The decor is modern and understated and gives you an idea of the fine cuisine on offer. The ambience is warm and inviting and the menu is a veritable feast of authentic Chinese and Thai dishes.

Few people with a taste for seafood would pass up the opportunity to indulge themselves in a feast of fresh prawns. These little fellows can quickly become addictive. There is an endless variety of ways to cook and serve prawns and they always give an impression of good taste.

The re-emergence of Royal Villa in Salthill has been greeted enthusiastically by the hundreds of customers who were regulars when the Royal Villa was upstairs in Shop Street for many years. After a gap of three years, during which time Charlie Chan opened a very swish restaurant in Oranmore, he decided to open another Royal Villa close to the centre of town. The new Royal Villa is run by the next generation of the family, Yvonne and soon-to-be husband Jeff are at the helm and it looks like it may be the most successful venture for the Chan family. It is located over the Atlantaquaria in Salthill.
